Zhanjiang is located in the extreme southwest Guangdong Province. It has a population of 6 million people. There are four districts within the city, Chikan (where the orphanage is located), Xiashan, Potou and Mazhang.

Zhanjiang is an important base for the oil exploration that occurs in the South China Sea. Additionally, it is an important port for deep-sea fishing.

Zhanjiang has several popular tourist sights, including Huguangyan, one of two special volcano lakes of the world, Leizhou Town, a nation-level historic and cultural city; Haishi Park and Nansandao Natural Park.
