Zhaoqing covers two districts, Duanzhou and Dinghu, two county-grade cities, Gaoyao and Sihui, as well as four counties: Guangning, DeQing, Fengkai and Huaiji. The city covers 15,000 square kilometers, and is inhabited by 377 million people.

Zhaoqing is located in the middle and west part of Guangdong Province, in the western part of the Pearl River Delta. It is an important transportation and communications hub with Hong Kong and Macau. Zhaoqing is located along the Tropic of Cancer, which brings fierce monsoon rains. It has abundant resources, including gold, granite, marble and limestone. The gold from Zhaoqing is 80% of the total of all the rest of Guangdong Province. It also produces abundant rice, mushrooms and camphor.

Zhaoqing played an important role in China's history and culture. It has over 300 historic sites, including the Mei Nunnery, Chongxi Tower, the City Wall from the Song Dynasty, Yuejiang Pavilion, and Stove Inscription of Seven Star Cave. Natural scenic sights include Seven Star Cave with its mountains and lakes, and Dinghu Mountain, known as the "emerald on the Tropic of Cancer".
