SWI Description:
The Sanshui orphanage is located on a large complex south of downtown. It was finished in January 2003. The Welfare complex contains the orphanage buildings, and many living quarters for the elderly. The orphanage includes a single large baby room that houses the orphanage's babies.

Prior to April 2000 all of the children were surnamed "Fu," derived from the Chinese word for orphanage ("Fuliyuan") but also happiness. When Ms. He became director, the names were changed to "He." That is still the name used, even though Director He is no longer there (see below).

International adoptions began in 1990, when the first children were adopted to Canada. The most children the orphanage has had at one time was in 1996, when a little over 70 kids were in the orphanage. As of late 2005, there were about 30 children. Domestic adoptions account for less than 10% of all adoptions here, a low number when compared to other orphanages. Few children have been sent to foster families.

Misc. Information:
Sanshui lies around 40 kilometers west of Guangzhou. Sanshui is one of four county-cities in the Foshan City area -- Sanshui, Nanhai, Shunde and Gaoming. This entire area is famous for its agricultural fertility, being called in Chinese "the land of fish and rice." It is also very commercially successful, with Sanshui being home to myriad factories and textile plants.

Director:
The orphanage has had three directors. Ms. Lin served as director from 1987 when the program started to April 2000. She was replaced by Ms. He, who was the director until April 2004, when she asked to be transferred out of the orphanage. The current director is Ms. Li.
